Overcoming The Fear Of Success

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

Fear of success

You rarely hear people say they are afraid of being successful, but it is quite common. Self-sabotage, lack of self esteem, and the fear of standing out leaves many people paralyzed and unable to achieve success that is well within their reach. How do you overcome this paralyzing fear?

Fear is a mindset, one that can leave you incapable of stepping out into the world and that shuts you down physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. In the article Shed Your Eeyore, Choose Happiness, Doctor Donna offers insight about her own troubles with taking the easy way out.

Yes, that’s right! Choosing to be afraid is the easy way out. After all, if I choose self-sabotaging by not applying myself and refusing challenging projects, I remain anonymous, I cannot make a mistake. I cannot be embarrassed in front of my colleagues, I do not have to experience failure or loss in business. It is simply a less risky.

But this easy way out guarantees missed opportunities. It may keep you comfortable and hidden, but you will also be without accomplishments of any kind.

One step at a time

“Start by making small changes, speaking to somebody you have never spoken to before.” suggests John Rampton from Due. Over the past year, Rampton has overcome his fears by doing things he wouldn’t normally do. He suggests, “Raise your hand to answer a question you normally would not answer. Eventually, these new habits create a routine and sense of comfort, as well as confidence. As time goes by, you will begin to see a shift in your mindset and your self-confidence will begin to bloom.”

Mind tricks

Public speaking is one of the biggest fears that holds people back from success. The key to building confidence is to get used to speaking and to use strategies to reduce your stress.

Here are a few tricks from Princeton Public Speaking:

·         Read the room: Try to meet a few audience members beforehand. Arrive a few minutes early and introduce yourself. If you are presenting mid-day, for example, arrive before a key break.

·         “Seed” the audience: Ask friends or colleagues to come to your presentation. Talk to the conference organizers when you arrive. Locate them in the crowd before you take the stage, if possible. Identifying where friendly faces are sitting gives you something to focus on if the anxiety starts to build.

·         Remember, the audience is on your side: In most situations, the audience is rooting for you to succeed, not waiting for you to fall flat.

·         Breathing: Breathing techniques (my favorites are 3 Deep Belly Breaths, Ujjaiy breathing, and the Alternate Nostril technique) can help alleviate anxiety.

Relax

Remember, change takes time. Take it one step at a time, and practice breathing techniques that will help you walk into every uncomfortable situation with your mind at ease. Implementing a workout regime into your routine and eating well can also help you stay more relaxed.

Making small changes and trying mind tricks can help create small shifts and patterns and give you the courage to step forward.
